  • Preparing meals
  • Swimming in pools, hot tubs, hot springs and the ocean
  • Using lotion, hair products, fragrances and other cosmetics

It is also best to avoid exposing jewellery to:

  • Strong heat and variable temperatures
  • Perfumes and cosmetics
  • Ultrasonic cleaning
  • Household chemicals

Recommendations for the care of gemstones and precious material used by Bergman Jewels are detailed below.

Gemstones

Gemologists define durability as a gemstone’s ability to withstand wear, heat, light, household chemicals, and low or high humidity. In evaluating a gemstone’s durability, gem experts consider three factors: 1) hardness, 2) toughness, and 3) stability. Gemstones have varying degrees of hardness, ranging from more fragile stones like pearl, up to the most durable material on earth, diamond. Nonetheless, the Bergman Jewels collection consist of jewellery made with fairly durable gemstones. For example Aquamarine and Peridot are more sensitive to thermal shocks than Topaz, Sapphire and Ruby. To clean gemstones, use warm water and a soft brush, followed by a soft cloth to dry it.

Pearls

Pearls are natural organic materials and very sensitive to chemical substances such as oils, creams, perfumes etc. To maintain the brilliance of pearl jewellery, avoid putting them in contact with cosmetics and extreme heat. Do not wear them while showering and swimming. In a humid environment, store your pearl jewelry under a soft cloth in its original case. For cleaning pearls, use a microfiber cloth for glasses and do not use soap and water.

Gold

Avoid rubbing gold jewelry against other jewelry pieces to prevent scratches. It is strongly recommended to store each piece separately in its box or travel case. To clean gold jewelry, use warm water and a soft brush, followed by a soft cloth to dry it.

Diamond

Even a diamond, the world’s hardest material, can be damaged under certain circumstances. Despite its hardness, diamonds remain delicate stones, likely to break from strong impact. To clean diamonds, use warm water and a soft brush, followed by a soft cloth to dry it.
